I have funding!

My grad program of choice has offered me a lovely sum of money….$16,500 research fellowship over nine months, as well as at least a year of tuition paid for.

This is so perfectly fantastic.

Thank you, English Department, for running a book sale that allows me to get a giant coffee table book of the “Stately Homes of Britain” and a book on Dutch New Amsterdam for the grand total of $1.50.

Also, today I learned that for some reason, in their endless saga to make the lives of students who pursue traditionally non-lucrative majors difficult, the university has scheduled the history department’s convocation at 1PM on Friday, May 25.  Our graduation is the next morning at 9. Uuuuugh.

So.  Today I had retail therapy for quite cheap.  I bought a pretty dress and a string of costume jewelry-ish pearls at Forever 21- quite vintage looking, I’m very proud of myself.   I bought a copy of Gosford Park for $2 at FYE because they’re going out of business, and a gardenia-smelling candle at Pier 1 Imports.

I will now burn said candle and finish the bottle of wine I bought yesterday while watching a movie and reading Black Elk Speaks for my senior seminar.

I feel fancy.

::EDIT:: I am also listening to the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary DVD.  Still feeling fancy.

::EDIT 2:: And eating tortilla chips.  Not so culturally elegant.

Had a super-splendid day in DC today!  Got to see my sister and family and went to a huge market and took the metro and ate a huge plate of spicy shrimp mac & cheese.

So when I had lunch with my parents the other day, I was telling them about my classes, and my dad got super excited about my vampire culture class.  You know, the ONE class I thought he was going to complain about as a waste of time.

Turns out that he has garnered quite the knowledge of vampire culture through his favorite movie series, Underworld.  Between the two of us, we had to bring my mom up to speed on the goth/vampire subculture, and Dad has offered his unofficial expert status as a resource for any projects I have to do.

Best moment ever.

So in an effort to keep my life in order, I thought I’d keep a list of all the concerts I’ve seen to date (2/12/12).

Ten Obsessions: Or, What Will Be The Majority of This Blog

1.) Jim James/My Morning Jacket.  I have developed a mildly ridiculous obsession/celebrity crush.  But seriously: that wild dark hair, that slightly Southern-accented voice, and the mad music skills? Let’s all be honest now- the man is pure sex.

2.) Historic things like houses and pictures and documents and basking in my choice of a useless major.

3.) Dresses.

4.) Pretty things, most notably houses, books, lace, food, and pictures.

5.) Corgis.  They’re fluffy and have stick-uppy ears.  Plus the Queen of England keeps them, thus elevating them to immediate status of perfect creatures.

6.) Corsets.  They are so neat.  I mean, who thought that it’d be really cool to stick animal bones/wood/steel/other largely unforgiving materials into a piece of clothing that women would squeeze themselves into and tie around their bodies while damaging almost all internal organs?  And the social connotations! What used to be a garment meant to restrict and control women’s bodies has now become something liberating for women’s sexuality, as it is a favorite in lingerie drawers everywhere.  Really fascinating.

7.) Occasional feminist rants.

8.) Trees.  I just really love trees. They’re so multi-purpose, for being stationary objects! They photosynthesize, they provide shade and homes for all sorts of nifty fauna, people can use them to build things, and they look really cool in pictures.

9.) Anything European.

10.) Everything else?  I can’t even come up with ten things, it just sounded like a nice, round, even number.

Currently hiding in the fashion/public policy building because I don’t feel like going anywhere, namely back to my apartment because a) I feel like it’s a hostile environment, and b.) after last night I’m convinced it’s haunted.
